Festive Fun as Cognition raises hundreds of pounds for charity

Cognition has raised over £800 in sponsorship for ActionAid’s East Africa Appeal 2011, following a charity fundraising day.

Staff raised the much needed funds by shedding their usual office attire to dress in costumes which fitted the chosen theme of ‘Famous for a Day’. A whole host of characters graced the office including Darth Vader, Mickey Mouse, Courtney Love, Marilyn Monroe and even Father Christmas himself!

Commenting on the charitable contribution, Managing Director Tim Witcherley aka Darth Vader said: “It was certainly a bizarre experience to walk through the office and see Marilyn Monroe on the phone to a client and one half of Jedward having a serious discussion at the printer with Minnie Mouse, but all the humiliation was worth it. I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who dipped into their pockets and gave generously for such a
great cause.”

A special prize was given to the winner of the company’s costume competition, which was awarded to Julie Kilburn, Designer in the Cognition creative team for her interpretation of Little Britain’s Vicky Pollard. Commenting on her win, Julie said:  "No, but, yeah, but, no, but...”

Cognition shortlisted for Mi award

We’re delighted to announce that Cognition’s work for financial services firm Anderson Locke has been shortlisted in the Best Financial Services Marketing Strategy/Campaign category at this year’s prestigious Mi Awards. Our campaign, which was designed to generate as many leads as possible from a small budget, achieved a fifty-fold return on investment.

Neil Wadsworth, owner of Anderson Locke, commented:

“All the enquiries generated by the campaign were of a high quality and needed very little validating or rationalising. In fact the campaign was so successful that we suspended it three weeks early because we had no space in our diaries for further appointments!”

We’re particularly pleased to have been recognised by the Mi judges because unlike some industry awards, these are based on financial results. Our success in getting to the finals pays testament to the commercial effect our campaign for Anderson Locke had. The award ceremony takes place on Thursday 17th November in Manchester – stay tuned to find out how we
get on!

Cognition bbq

On 11th June Cognition held its first summer barbecue, incorporating an Oscars-style ceremony with live music, award-winning caterers and (of course) a generous amount of champagne!

We had a fantastic turnout and the event was a huge success - partly in honour of Simon Jolly, who has just celebrated a successful 10 years at Cognition! Si, here's to another 10! And what says ‘thank you’ more than a room full of drunken colleagues all wearing Simon face masks and the well deserved presentation of an iPad2?!

It's safe to say fun was definitely had by all; from the Cognition Oscars (with some predictable winners... Sarah!) to the fantastic folk band that had us all in stitches for hours. To round up the night, the team danced until the early morning, obviously led by the 'best dancer' Oscar winner... Jenny Ricketts-Smith!

And the winners of the Cognition 2011 Oscars are...

Biggest Diva - Sophie Eadon
Clumsiest Person - Tom Witcherley
Best Drunk - Caroline Wildman
Trendiest Dresser - Sophie Eadon
Best Dancer - Jenny Ricketts-Smith
‘Foot In Mouth' - Caroline Wildman

EDM WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

EDM Website
Cognition has designed and developed a new search-engine optimised website for one of the UK’s most experienced electronic document management providers, the EDM Group.

The capabilities of the site include a new dynamic flash interface on the homepage, providing an interactive showcase of EDM’s services and the features that set them apart from their competitors.

Contributing to its ease of use, the site is built with Content Management System Joomla. This enables non-technical authors, both at EDM and Cognition, to take control of the website, eliminating the need for external developers for day-to-day management tasks. The update provides cost savings and ensures that the content of the website can be kept fresh, relevant and search-optimised.

Digital Manager for EDM at Cognition, Sophie Eadon comments, “The new website provides clear calls to action throughout the site, and search engine visibility is now much improved. By using the coding language PHP, the development of the site was really quick and cost-effective. And because it’s totally modular, additional functionality can be added over time.”

CEWE Photobook and Cognition at the Baby Show 2010

Paper dress

CEWE PHOTOBOOK, Europe’s number one photo book company, turned heads in October when they exhibited at The Baby Show, held at Earls Court, London. In an unusual PR stunt devised by Cognition, a model with a six-month pregnancy bump took to the runway in a custom-designed maternity dress made entirely from photographs. The photo dress, which displayed pictures of autumnal scenes, made its debut on the live Baby and Maternity Fashion Show catwalk over the three-day event.

The unique garment was created by Cognition client executive Rachel Munson, who made use of her dressmaking talents, acquired as part of her marketing and fashion design degree from the American Intercontinental University of London.

The Baby Show, which takes place three times a year in different locations across the UK, is the country’s biggest event for parents-to-be and new parents – with more than 75,000 visitors attending in 2009. As part of Cognition’s strategy to drive visitors to the CEWE stand, the company offered attendees the chance to enter an exclusive competition to win a giant teddy and a hamper of personalised CEWE goodies.

Jenny Ricketts, Cognition’s Strategic PR Manager for CEWE PHOTOBOOK, commented, “Our attendance at The Baby Show was hugely productive. The inspirational, eye-catching dress on the catwalk created a great deal of buzz around CEWE’s presence at the event.”

Warwick photo finisher opens its doors to celebrate ‘50 Years of Innovation’

Warwick-based photo finishing company, CeWe Color has unveiled a brand new £250,000 technology as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations. Mayor of Warwick, Cllr Trudy Offer cut the ribbon on the state of the art card printing machine during a VIP open day at its Tachbrook Park lab, marking the launch of the company’s new personalised greetings card service, Card Town.
Local photo enthusiasts, schools and colleges attending the event were also given the opportunity to tour the cutting edge facilities and take part in a series of fun and educational photography-related master classes.

Managing Director, Duncan Midwood, comments:

“We’re delighted to open our doors to celebrate such a significant point in our history. This event has marked the start of what we hope will be yet another 50 years working even more closely with schools, colleges and the community and continuing to help people bring those all important memories to life through their captured images.

“The photo finishing industry has moved on so quickly in recent years that many of our competitors have really struggled to keep up. That’s why it’s such a testament to CeWe’s ability to adapt and evolve that not only are we still here, but that we’re still pushing the boundaries and innovating. We’re incredibly proud to be unveiling our cutting edge Card Town technology after significant investment into its development. It means greater job security for our staff and more choice and better quality for our customers.”

Visitors attending the event participated in a variety of photo-related activities. Beginning the day with a team photograph, guests received an exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the lab facility to see how photographs, photo books and photo gifts are processed.

Activities also included a master class on how to make the perfect CEWE PHOTOBOOK and a hands-on workshop where visitors made a Cyanotype photogram. This class was a step back into history as groups learned how this process was used to create images right up until the early 20th century. Selected groups got the chance to design their very own Card Town greeting card using their team photo or an image brought from home.

Staff members were also honoured during an awards presentation rewarding innovation and dedication to the company. One of the winners, Andy Fincham, picked up the award for Outstanding Commitment after notching up 31 years with the company.

CeWe Color offers a number of services from its Warwick lab, including prints, photo books, photo calendars, greeting cards, canvases and photo gifts. Each year the company produces in excess of 30 million prints, 300,000 photo books and 120,000 calendars in the UK alone.

Promotional staff braved the crowds to supply revelers with custom-made British flags branded with CEWE offers. Promotional codes were distributed to the public in order for them to receive a free personalised photo mug and jointly promote the social media group. TRIO OF BUSINESS WINS

Trio

Three new companies have appointed Cognition since the beginning of December. We are delighted to confirm that Collard Trolart, Rednal and Via Michelin have all selected us as their agency.

Collard Trolart is one of France’s most successful and innovative heating companies. At the end of November, we were invited to their factory on the outskirts of Paris to see some of Europe’s leading experts in steam heating at work developing and patenting environmentally friendly technologies.

The company played an instrumental role in the development of the Paris district heating system, so their equipment is used to heat landmarks such as the Louvre. Since our visit, we have updated the Collard Trolart brand to better reflect its unique heritage and its commitment to ‘green’ heating, and we’re putting the finishing touches to a new website which will go live this month.

A wholly owned subsidiary of the Michelin group, Via Michelin designs, develops and markets digital products for road users such as travel guides, route planners, hotel booking facilities and tourism information. We’re delighted to be working with such a well-known brand and, having already completed some tactical activity, look forward to getting stuck into some meaty projects in the coming months.

Supplying both European wider world markets, Rednal is a leading manufacturer of pressure vessels and hydraulic rams. On a trip to their factory in Oswestry, Shropshire, a team from Cognition was given a guided tour of their operations at the beginning of a project to refresh the look and feel of their website.

The digital team have since had some fantastic feedback from Rednal management, who are thrilled with the results so far.
These recent wins underline our ongoing success with a variety of high-quality businesses. We welcome our new clients on-board and look forward to helping them make 2011 their best year yet.

SMALLPEICE TRUST LAUNCH INTERACTIVE GAMES

Cognition’s digital department has created a series of online interactive quizzes for the Smallpeice Trust, an independent educational charity that runs hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) activities and courses for pupils in years 6-12.

Developed as part of the website’s ‘Fun Activities’ section, the quizzes test users’ knowledge of key topics against the clock. The participants must answer 20 questions as quickly as possible to be in with a chance of getting their scores on the website’s leader board.
The quizzes include a ‘Robot Build’ game, which allows the participant to create their own virtual robot as they collect robot parts for each question answered correctly.

Sophie Eadon, Digital Account Manager for Cognition comments: “Smallpeice’s new quizzes are an interactive and lively way to get children and teens more engaged with what are often the less popular school subjects. It is proving to be a fun and proactive platform to get further exposure for the Smallpeice brand.”

Why not try the quizzes out for yourself here?

Following a comprehensive brand audit, one of the leading insurance brokers for the removals and self storage industry, Reason Global, has engaged Cognition to handle its marketing, PR and digital requirements.

The thorough audit process saw members of the Cognition team meeting and interviewing key stakeholders, reviewing brand identity and appraising the company’s on and offline presence. Findings were then presented to the board, alongside a series of recommendations and strategic advice to meet the company’s market objectives.

Katie Worthing, Strategic Client Manager, comments: “We found that Reason Global was generally on the right track with its marketing activity, however the company’s USPs weren’t being communicated in the most effective way – and that’s where we come in. We have more than a decade of experience delivering campaigns for businesses like Reason Global, and we know our strategic advice and creative input will make a huge difference to the company.”

Following engagement, Cognition has created a bold new brand that is due to be rolled out across a new suite of collateral and website, handled by Cognition Digital. The digital team is also enhancing the company’s PPC and SEO strategy and Cognition PR is deploying ongoing PR support as part of the integrated campaign.

Cognition has been engaged by Solihull firm Convergence Group to launch its new superfast internet service Bullet, to West Midland’s SMEs.

Hailed as the UK’s fastest and most advanced internet connection, Bullet uses BT’s new Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) technology, which gives small businesses access to a superfast internet speeds previously only afforded by large corporates.

Cognition was tasked with the creation and launch of the new brand in the shortest time possible, as Cognition Client Manager Katie Worthing explains: “We know that many of Bullet’s competitors are launching into the same market in the next few months and that it was vital we establish the brand as quickly as possible. We usually work to longer time scales, but on this occasion we had to deliver in double-quick time, and we did. From start to finish, an integrated marketing, PR and digital campaign was devised and implemented within eight days!”

The campaign included the creation of a new brand identity; copy, design and build of new microsite bulletinternet.com; design and implementation of e-shot, direct mail and outdoor advertising campaigns and PR activity which included the creation of “Bullet Man” - who attracted a lot of attention in Birmingham!

The results are impressive. Just one week after the launch and Convergence Group have already sent out 14 quotes, which equate to a three figure revenue and a very happy client!
